What should I set my a.c. to so that I can save money on my bill?

For the winter and summer it should be set to a certain number so that your bill is not too much. Can anybody tell me these two numbers (winter/summer).

For summer, 78.


For winter, 68.


Those are ideals, but whatever you can comfortably tolerate.





Turning your AC off and on will use more money. When you turn it off during the summer when you leave for work, your house heats up. It will go from 78 degrees to, say 90 degrees. When you come home and turn it on again, your AC has to work significantly harder to get back to 78 degrees.





Instead of turning the AC off, increase the temperature when you are not home, so it won't have to work as hard to get back to your desired temperature.





The same goes for heat in the winter.





Also:





Increase the temperature in your fridge by one or two notches.





Make sure to change the filter in your air handling system (draws the air in for heating and cooling) once a year, more if you have pets or live in a dusty area.





Decrease the temperature of your water heater by 5-10 degrees.





Summer - keep blinds closed during the day.
Reply:Off if you are not home. 80 during the day if you are home and 78 at night. Winter the heat should not be above 68.
Reply:for summer, set it as high as you can tolerate. and turn it off durng the day when you're not home.
Reply:It's all about the comfort factor. The lower you set it for during the winter will lower your bill and the higher you set it for in summer will have to same effect. Personally I keep mine at 72° during the summertime and 74° the 2 weeks it cold in Texas. If you are in a house, I would suggest a programmable thermostat to set at the times you are home and away to avoid running or running as often when you are away. There are also many pther simple things you can do to make your home more effecient. Caulk gaps between windows, check glazing around windows, door gaps, install weatherstriping/doorsweeps, etc.
Reply:We set our a/c to 78 and that's only to take out the humidity. Usually we leave it off.





Our furnace is set to 61 from 10pm to 4pm (while we're sleeping and away for work) and 68 from 4pm until 10pm while we're home and awake.

Reply:You need a programmable thermostat to start. Turn temps down when it is off hours and the ac should be 70 degrees when home and heat should be 72. Do not turn either completely off when house is empty but 5 degrees lower or higher.
